I'm always on the lookout for ways to do wargaming on the cheap and the other day I came across one. Previously I had bought a large roll fo green felt to at as a simple battle mat. But last weekend I came across something in the middle aisle of Lidl. Artificial grass mats for £7.99.

Even though I was there to grab something for dinner, I immediately grabbed one and managed to carry it all the way home under one arm. It's a little... fluffy, but it does the job. Crucially, and something that makes it better than the roll of felt, it has a rubber gribbed underside to keep in in place once it's laid down. I think I might need to cut it down to size (maybe something like Mantic Games' new Kings of War: Champions Battle Mat, designed specifically to fit the average kitchen table) but I think I can really make use of this.
I of course broke it out for a few test shots. I included some Warhammer terrain and one of Jon Hodgson's awesome backdrops.
